The Highland weather took a sharp downturn as the event started, and the opening weekend was a real test with heavy rain and high winds. This was a big contrast to the benign conditions which pertained almost throughout Challenge 2008. We then had four or five days of beautiful sunny weather, though still with a fairly cool wind which often came from the east. Then on the middle weekend it was back to square one with the wind and rain. People trying to get through the Lairig Ghru faced particularly bad conditions with the pass acting like a wind funnel. It was a real struggle to get over the top and at least two Challengers were beaten back. A phone call from the Lecht ski area cafe reported that it was snowing there! Jocks Road east of Braemar was also challenging but after that the weather relented and for most of you the finish was dry and reasonably warm, enabling you to celebrate your crossing in good style as you hit the east coast. We didnt hear of any skinnydipping in the North Sea this year, which shows common sense prevailing over that feeling of jubilation at completing a Challenge! There was a steady stream of retirements throughout the event, for a variety of reasons, in quite a few cases linked to the conditions you were experiencing. This was not a Challenge for the ultra-lightweight brigade; May in Scotland is now very unpredictable and you do need really good gear to help you through as well as a strong mental attitude. Our first retirement came on the opening day, a bad muscle pull which can happen at any time, and the last was on the final day when Doug Smith, having battled heroically against injury for some time, couldnt quite make it to the east coast. Midway through we had the odd numerical quirk of the first and last on the list, nos 1 and 379, retiring within an hour of each other. Many routes were changed, which is a sensible thing to do if conditions are against you and is absolutely fine as long as you keep us informed. Markus Petter from Austria, having put Fraserburgh on his route sheet as a finish, ended up walking into Montrose. Others abandoned higher level plans for more straightforward lines through the glens. The aim of the event is to make the crossing of Scotland on foot, and if your original route proves shall we say a little ambitious, then a rethink onto an easier line is never a bad idea. The whole Challenge area was utilised, with Donald Gray walking almost our southern boundary through Callander and Perth and along the Sidlaw Hills to Arbroath, and a number of you opting for the north coast option (or at least part of it) into Fraserburgh or Peterhead. These latter included Heike Lies and Ethel Wilson, both of whom were on their tenth crossings. The route changes meant that Braemar and Tarfside were both extremely busy and St Cyrus was again the most popular finish point, though a good number went to Dunnottar Castle (one Challenger finishing there for the 8th time, we believe). The social side of the Challenge was clearly in full swing almost from the start and climaxed with two wonderful evenings at the Park Hotel as we welcomed you all in. We wanted it to be a great Challenge and it was. The memories will last long after the aches and pains have gone, and once the summer is over you can start looking forward instead of back. Planning has already started.see you on C31for another great event in May 2010! In and Out After the Final Details were issued, a total of 16 people had to withdraw from the event for various reasons. They included two, Mike Fallon and Steve Speed, who should have been on a tenth crossing and one, David Gray, who tragically collapsed and died while out running. We were only able to replace a few of them, with one of the last replacements, Vince Vogel from the USA, coming in two weeks before the off to join Jeanette Tennants party where he quickly became known as Mr Invincible. The following 48 people sadly had to retire during the event: nos 1, 10, 39, 40, 45, 61, 65, 78, 86, 87, 89, 113, 131 (David Wishart, late replacement), 146, 147, 152, 156, 161, 171, 177, 201, 203, 204, 205, 210, 221, 230, 231, 270, 273, 277-280, 294, 295, 308-311, 314, 316, 320, 328, 338, 354, 373, 379. The reasons given were: leg/knee injuries 12, blisters 8, retired with partner 6, exhausted or behind schedule 6, weather 5, unwell 5, back injuries 2, hip injuries 2, business reasons 2. Those who retired should not feel bad. There is no such word as failure on the Challenge: simply to have entered, done all the planning and taken part is an achievement, and we hope to see you all again. Facts and Figures There were 370 starters, 48 retirements and 322 finishers. The finishing figure is not unnaturally the highest ever. The retirement figure is above average. A total of 6493 people have now completed the Challenge, if our records are correct (that of course includes many multiple crossings). First in this year, at 2pm on Friday 15 May, was Marc Jacobs. Last in, just over a week later at 4.15pm on Friday 22 May, were Stuart and Maria Scott. Lou and Phyllis La Borwit were our senior pairing, with a combined age of 156. Our senior Challengers this year were Bernard Fowkes and Barbara Johnson, both 80 years young. The youngest finisher was Shawn Grund from the USA (21), giving us a starting age-range of 59 years: few events can boast that. We had another great bunch of overseas Challengers and have now welcomed more than 170 friends from overseas in total. New countries for this year were Oman and Qatar in both cases Scots working out there. Special congratulations to all of them, to the first-timers, and to all the solo walkers - it can be hard to carry on sometimes when you're on your own and conditions are tough. Our thanks to all Challengers who helped others - we know that a number of potential retirements were prevented in this way, and that is very much what the Challenge is all about. Graham Brookes, we believe, had the most tops 20 Munros and 6 Corbetts, giving him a remarkable total of 404 summits in his 20 crossings. Chris Peart completed his Grahams on the way across, having a few years ago similarly finished off his Corbetts on the Challenge John Burt has now completed 13 crossings with 13 different start and finish points. Ian Whyte had his 7th Ness finish and has at least three more lined up! John and Mary Allcock had a busy and interesting crossing. They were picked up by relatives at Blair Atholl and driven to Hexham where they proudly enjoyed a performance of Oliver! in which their grandson had the lead role. Early next morning they were driven back up to Blair Atholl and as Mary put it set off again into the rain, wind and mist. Earlier on their crossing they had had tea with Alec Cunningham and Robin Murdoch, who many Challengers will recall, at Robins home by Loch Rannoch; and later on in the pub at Memus they got chatting to another customer who ended up taking them home for supper, bed and breakfast. Its quite amazing what you all get up to! Well done all. Special Awards This year, 12 people completed a tenth crossing and were presented with a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement. They were: Richard Bannister, Peter Goodwin, Kim Hardy, Margaret Hems, Barbara Johnson, Heike Lies, Russ Manion, John Manning, David Mitchell, Marion Mitchell (no relation), David Wilkinson and Ethel Wilson. Congratulations to them all. Heike becomes the first German Challenger to reach ten. In all, 125 men and 37 women have now become ten timers. Sadly, Nan Lyle, who was on her tenth crossing, had to retire at Tomintoul with a bad cough and a knee injury. Hopefully she can try again next year. Graham Brookes completed his 20th crossing and also received a plaque. He joins a fairly exclusive club of 8 20-timers. Of this years field, John Donohoe, Ron Reynolds, Bill Robertson and Chris Townsend were on the very first Challenge in 1980. Bill has now completed 28 crossings. Reporting In Thanks for all the phone calls and texts. With very few exceptions, you were great at calling in on schedule, and the texting service is proving more valuable each year you can often get a text through when the signal is too weak for a voice message. We had only a few moments of anxiety, and were usually able to resolve these by contacting other Challengers or accommodation places. Having your mobile phone numbers on the route sheet definitely helps. Even if your phone wasnt always switched on, we did find that leaving a message or sending a text generally brought a response. There were a few rather more serious situations. Alan Staples called us from Rannoch Moor to say he had had a fall and his head was bleeding quite badly. We contacted the mountain rescue service who took him down to Kinlochleven where the doctor patched him up. After a days rest, Alan continued and finished the walk. Marie Donohoe also had a fall coming off Lochnagar and suffered head and face injuries. She too finished, looking a bit like she had been in the ring with Mike Tyson! Both Alan and Marie showed real Challenge spirit in battling on, as did quite a few others including those who had something of an epic struggle in the Lairig Ghru on the middle weekend. This led to a rather cosy night in Corrour Bothy with 14 Challengers crammed into a space which comfortably accommodates 6 at the most. Thanks John Donohoe, Peter Goddard, Alan Hardy, Bert Hendrikse, Bernie Marshall, Ian Shiel, Alvar & Ann Thorn and Colin Tock again shouldered the bulk of the route vetting, and all of them did a superb job. Our thanks for their efforts. Peter reckoned he spent 240 hours vetting routes, which is quite a commitment. We are grateful to all the start points. We thank all the hotels, B&Bs and hostels along the route who clearly looked after many of you in exceptional fashion. We thank SYHA for again extending to us the courtesy of guest membership for the event, and the National Trust for Scotland for providing superb hospitality at Mar Lodge. Looks like there is the beginnings of a tradition growing up there... Sincere thanks go to Ann Maden, Janet Towers, Chris Ball and Carole Shimmin for their magnificent efforts in running St Drostans Hostel at Tarfside. They served a large number of meals and snacks and used up a huge supply of bacon! They logged over 170 Challengers passing through or staying. On the Tuesday night there were 60 tents on the field. Stan and Bill again provided matchless hospitality at Lochcallater Lodge and not a few Challengers admitted to somewhat hazy recollections of their time there. Jocks Road the morning after provides a sharp sobering-up exercise! We must also thank Gordon Menzies for getting so many of you across Loch Ness safely this year. He has done a great job for us over the years. The management and staff of the Park Hotel in Montrose were again really splendid throughout the event, and organised both Challenge dinners in exemplary fashion. On the Friday we had 180 people sitting down and on the Friday there were 96. Our thanks to Rab for donating the T-shirts and producing the Challenge fleeces to high quality (both were voted a great success and we sold over 100 fleeces). Thanks also to Mountain Kingdoms for their continued support. Rannoch Press did another fine job on the Challenge certificate, this year individually printing all the names on, and also printed all the Challenge details (and this report). The free miniatures of Bowmore whisky went down (literally) exceptionally well and we are grateful to Bowmore for this extremely generous gesture, which we will do our best to get repeated next year. We thank the Edge for the pin badges and plaques and Ross Promotional for producing the mugs, mousemats and pens. Both companies were very efficient and helpful. Robin Woodger and Alan Hardy each did a superb job on Control. Their knowledge of the country, and of Challengers, was invaluable, and on many occasions they were able to give specific and helpful advice. During my time at the Park I tried my best not to get in their way. Thanks also to my wife Patricia for much appreciated help throughout, and also to Suus Hubregtse and others who helped. We processed over 170 people through on the Thursday but hope you all still felt you got a personal welcome. We thank TGO magazine for their 30 years of unstinting support, without which the event would not be possible. We were delighted to see editor Cameron McNeish and the magazines publisher Darren Bruce at the Thursday dinner. Deputy Ed Emily Rodway joined us on the Friday after completing her own first crossing with her partner John Chivall. Surplus Shirts and Fleeces We have some T-shirts left, but only in large and XL sizes. If youd like one of these, send an A4 SAE to the co-ordinator with 1.20 postage. All the other sizes are gone. We have no Rab micro fleeces left but a number of people expressed interest at the finish in obtaining one. If you are interested, drop us a line with your size and we will see if more can be made available. Other Challenge Merchandise The new Challenge mugs, mousemats and pens were well received. We still have stock of all of them and an order form is enclosed in case you forgot to pick yours up at the finish. All orders will be promptly dealt with. JMT Free Membership The John Muir Trust are generously offering Challengers free membership for one year. You can take advantage of this special offer by completing the enclosed form and returning it to JMT. Please note that we dont have enough copies of the form for everyone but have tried to send one to each pair or group. If you dont receive a form please write to JMT at Tower House, station Road, Pitlochry, Scotland PH16 5AN and ask for one. Provosts Visit We were delighted to receive a visit from the Provost of Angus, Mrs Ruth Leslie Melville, on Wednesday 20 May. Ruth met a number of Challengers and stayed with us for over an hour, clearly enjoying her time with us. This visit followed the Angus Ambassador Tourism Award which we received in November 2008. As a result of the Provosts visit a press release was issued by the Angus Ahead organisation and this led to further good publicity for the Challenge. Send Us Your Challenge Memories and Photos! Cameron and Emily at TGO are looking for your stories from the 2009 TGO Challenge, especially those that capture the essence of this wonderful event, reflecting on the people and places, the incidents and adventures along the way. These will form part of a special pull-out supplement in the October issue of the magazine. It's the Challengers that make the event so special, and it would be great to hear from the Challengers themselves! If you want to write up some of your reflections, let us have around 200-300 words, accompanied by photos if possible. Digital images (with or without words) are also very welcome. Please send words and pictures to Emily Rodway at the TGO editorial address (TGOC '09 Stories & Pix, TGO Magazine, 200 Renfield Street, Glasgow G2 3QB) or you can email them to emily.rodway@tgomagazine.co.uk Remember to include captions for the images, or at least a note of who is in the photo, where and when it was taken, and, most importantly, by whom. We'll choose a selection of the best to appear in the magazine and we'll also upload an additional selection to the TGO Challenge pages on the magazine's website ( HYPERLINK "http://www.tgomagazine.co.uk" www.tgomagazine.co.uk). If you can include a contact sheet, indexed by image file name, all the better! If you are sending words and images, you can put them all on the same disc. Challenge 2009 was not short of incident, so get writing! All contributions should arrive by Friday 17 July at the latest. Those whose words and/or images are chosen for inclusion in the special supplement will receive a year's free subscription to TGO - so don't forget to include your full name and address, as well as a phone number and email address in case we need to contact you. Your subscription will, of course, start AFTER the October issue goes on sale on September 4 - and that's the issue you'll need for the details and exclusive entry form for the 31st TGO Challenge in 2010. Digital versionalso available. In case of difficulty obtaining the magazine contact Emily at the email address above. Challenge 31 The 31st Challenge will run from 14-28 May 2010. St Drostans Hostel at Tarfside has already been booked for the second week. The entry form will appear in the October issue of TGO (on sale early September), as detailed above. In case of difficulty obtaining the magazine, use their website or phone 0141 302 7700. The acceptance level is reverting to 300 for the 2010 Challenge. We will again make route sheets available on-line (though they can of course still by sent by post if you prefer); the electronic form is very popular and is easy for us to handle. The route sheet is being slightly modified to provide us with a little more information, and the admin form introduced in 2009 is being retained as it provided very useful information. The rule that those completing ten (or indeed twenty!) crossings must then take a year off no longer applies. Instead, their entries will be accepted, but if there is pressure on places, we will ask them to go onto a standby list. We feel this is a fair way to proceed. The following will be exempt from the draw for places (assuming a draw is needed): those on a 10th or 20th crossing plus their walking partners (WPs); first-time overseas Challengers plus WPs; those who took part in the first Challenge in 1980 plus WPs. If you applied for the 2009 Challenge but did not get a place we will do our very best to get you on to the 2010 walk. This does not apply to those who regained their places through the standby list. The draw for places (if needed) will not be held at the Scottish Reunion as it was for 2009 as we felt this spoilt many peoples weekend, but will be carried out separately under supervision. Join the Club The Over the Hill Club was formed, and is run by Challengers. A full programme of walking meets and social events throughout the year keeps you in touch. All Challengers, friends and family are welcome to join. Membership details from the club secretary: David Wilkinson, 7 Royd Avenue, Gilstead, Bingley BD16 3NW, email: HYPERLINK "mailto:wdavidwilko@aol.com" wdavidwilko@aol.com Reunions and Gatherings The Scottish Reunion will take place at The Alexandra Hotel, Fort William, over the weekend of 23-25 October 2009. Full details enclosed or from Bernie and Pauline Marshall, 2 Burnsall Mews, Silsden, Keighley BD20 9NY ( HYPERLINK "mailto:paulinemarshall@ukonline.co.uk" paulinemarshall@ukonline.co.uk or 01535 655006). This is a great weekend so why not come along. All Challengers old and new and their partners are welcome. The Spring Gathering will again be held at the Snake Pass Inn, Derbyshire, in March 2010. More news in the autumn. Watch the Challenge website for news of other possible reunions. Challenge Database Copies of the full database, updated to include the 2009 event, are now available by sending a CD to the co-ordinator. There is no charge for this service, but a suitable SAE is appreciated. The database runs to over 60 pages and contains listings and statistics for every Challenge going back to 1980, plus yearly analysis of finishers, list of ten-timers, all overseas Challengers etc, so it has much of interest. Vetters Meeting A very constructive vetters meeting was held at the Park on the final Friday of the Challenge. We are continually trying to improve the service we provide, and as a result of the meeting the notes provided to Challengers in November once you are accepted for the event are going to be further revised, expanded and strengthened to help your route planning. We will, however, be taking a firm line as regards the standard of route sheets. Distance and ascent figures are still a cause for concern. These must be worked out accurately and it is clear that quite a few Challengers dont really know how to calculate ascent. Well be providing advice on this. Please note that foul weather alternative routes must be provided for Jocks Road and the Lairig Ghru (both of which provided a very severe test this year). Any route not showing a FWA for these sections will simply be returned, regardless of the experience of the Challenger submitting it. We will also be underlining that the role of vetters is to advise on the safety and practicality of routes submitted. We do expect Challengers to sort out such things as overnight accommodation and resupplying along the way themselves. One vetter put it well when he said that the Challenge should be a journey of discovery, and we hope it can be approached in that spirit in future. Having said that, we are of course always willing to offer extra support to overseas Challengers and to first-timers. Feedback We are always happy to receive feedback on vetters comments as this helps us keep our information up to date. If you have any feedback (or other route info which you think might help in future) please pass this on to your vetter if you have their email address or to the co-ordinator if you dont. A few excerpts from the Comments Book Coming from Seattle we thought wed be prepared for the rain but nothing prepared us for the one-inch sleet after the Falls of Glomach, 70mph winds, or a failed propane canister rocketing around the tent. Lots of challengers but even more great folks. Nigel Ellis & Lynn paquette (99/100) Thank goodness Scotland isnt wider! Fran Mellors and Fiona Bennett (27 & 29) We had sun, rain, snow, hail and gale-force winds and that was just the first morning! Ian Cotterill (67) A real challenge this year with some amazing sights including a star-filled sky at 1am with three gnarled old Scots pines silhouetted against a northern glow. A great experience. Les & Irene Aird 9188/189) We had some superb wild camps, the most memorable being at 700m on Gulvains ridge, sheltered from the wind where we watched a snow-covered Ben Nevis in the evening sun Martin & Sue Banfield (20/21) It is said that its the journey that matters rather than the destination. This is very true unless they do bar snacks of course. Anon. This one almost finished me off, but looking ack I would not have missed it. Like all challenges there are problems to overcome, though they are not necessarily the ones you think youll find when you start. Will I be back again? I think so, its getting to be a habit!
