We hope these notes will be of interest and use in considering your entry and in planning for what we are sure will be a very special event. 1: Dates. This will be a normal two-week Challenge. The dates are 8-22 May 2009. 2: Entry form. The entry form will appear only in the October 2008 issue of TGO magazine (on sale early September). Only this form or a photocopy of it will be accepted for entries. If you have difficulty obtaining TGO, go to the magazine’s website at HYPERLINK "http://www.tgomagazine.co.uk" www.tgomagazine.co.uk or phone 0141 302 7700. 3: Numbers. For this year only, we plan to accept 360 entries, plus the usual small number of people associated with the sponsors or partners. This is a 20% increase on the normal figure of 300, and is also divisible by 30. There will be automatic entry for people on a 10th or 20th crossing, and also for first-time overseas Challengers. Should the event be oversubscribed, all others will go into a draw for places, and a standby list will operate as usual. 4: Entry fee and envelopes. The entry fee will be increased to Ѓ30 per person for 2009. This is the first increase for 5 years. However, to offset this we are doing away with the requirement to send stamped reply envelopes, which should save you some money. We will mail all Challenge material in standard format envelopes, which overcomes the perennial problem of people either not sending envelopes or sending the wrong size with inadequate postage! 5: Start Points. We will be adding at least one, possibly two, new start points for 2009. More details will be given with the entry form. We also wish to get a more even spread of numbers using all the start points, and will try to do this in two ways. (a): We will be asking all those who have completed 5 or more Challenges (including groups which include a 5-plus Challenger) not to use the three most popular start points (Oban, Mallaig and Shiel Bridge). This still gives you plenty of choice, and provides you with an opportunity to use one of those start points you have looked at so often and still not used! (b): We will set a limit on these three start points – probably 60 at Shiel Bridge and 50 at Oban and Mallaig. Once this limit is reached, any routes nominating one of these start points will be asked to replan using a different start. 6: Route submissions. To assist the vetting team and get an even flow of routes coming in, there will be two deadlines. Again, all those who have completed 5 or more Challenges (including groups which include a 5-plus Challenger) will be asked to submit routes by 31 January. Others will have the normal deadline of 28 February (but can of course submit routes earlier). Please note that for 2009, these deadlines will be strictly applied. We have been generous in recent years in accepting late routes but with the likelihood of considerable pressure on places, and on the vetting team, we will not do this in 2009. You will get one reminder, about 10 days before the deadline, and that’s all. You still have plenty of time to get a route together – 3 months for an experienced Challenger really shouldn’t be a problem. We are also looking for a higher standard of route submission. Requirements will be clearly set out in the event details in early November, and any route which does not comply with these requirements will be returned for replanning. This is a safety measure and is in your own interests. We are keen to encourage people to be more enterprising in their route planning. Far too many routes from experienced Challengers this year followed a well-trodden line and lacked imagination. This is particularly true in the second half of the Challenge where Braemar-Callater-Jock’s Road-Clova-Tarfside-Edzell has become the norm (with the Ballater-Mt Keen-Tarfside alternative). There are plenty of other ways of getting to the coast. This note does not apply to first-timers, who are encouraged to use well-defined routes for safety reasons. 6: At the End. Challenge 2009 is a major celebration of the event itself, of backpacking and of Scotland and we hope to provide a fitting climax. We are therefore planning not one but two Challenge dinners and presentations. These will be on Thursday 21 May and Friday 22 May. You will be asked to nominate, either on the entry form or route sheet, which dinner you wish to attend. If the numbers are skewed unduly towards one of the evenings, a ballot for places will be held. With increased numbers taking part it would be impossible to accommodate everyone on one evening, especially as we hope to invite a number of special guests who have been associated with the Challenge for a long time. We trust you will therefore accept that this is a fair way to proceed. It gives you a chance to extend your walk by a day and finish on the Friday. Of course, if you do not wish to attend either dinner, or have to finish early, that’s not a problem. 7: Merchandise. We are hoping to develop a range of C30 merchandise including mugs, pens and clothing. Further details will be given in the Challenge literature. Suggestions from Challengers for special souvenirs are welcome. If you have any comments on any of the points raised above, please contact us. We are always glad to hear from you.
